Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing business. Here we consider: What is AI and how can your company benefit from cutting-edge innovations, such as machine-learning, robot process automation, natural language processing and more.

What is AI? Artificial intelligence at a glance

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the process by which machines – usually computers – simulate human intelligence.

One way that machines can be taught to do this is by ingesting massive amounts of ‘training data’ and analyzing it for patterns, before using those patterns to make future predictions.

AI is revolutionizing systems worldwide. Here we consider: What is AI and why is it having such a huge impact on our lives?

What is AI and how are companies using it?

Transformative examples of artificial intelligence today

Artificial intelligence powers many different types of tech, often in the form of machine learning, whereby computers act without programming.

Machines learn by analyzing data for patterns, sorting data according to similarities and differences, or by receiving feedback on their actions.

Robotic process automation (RPA) uses artificial intelligence to automate certain tasks, and perform them efficiently and accurately. It’s the perfect fit for repetitive, detail-heavy work, such as analyzing large numbers of documents to check they have been completed correctly – and it can do this much more efficiently than a human.

Natural language processing (NLP) is when computers ‘read’ or ‘listen to’ human language. This technology is used in spam detection, for example, when computers are trained to read and analyze an email’s subject line or content. It is also used in language translation and speech recognition.

AI Continues to Evolve and Permeate Industries

Machines can also use cameras and signal processing to ‘see’ in a way that is far superior to a human. This process, known as ‘machine vision’, is used to verify human signatures, and is also used in medical image analysis.

Machine learning is now being used to develop an artificial intelligence robot that can interact with humans on a social basis – such as keeping vulnerable people company and reminding them to take their medication or perform essential tasks.

Generative artificial intelligence, through an AI generator such as ChatGPT or the art generator DALL-E, is becoming increasingly common. An AI text generator can produce human-standard emails, essays, poems, articles, computer code and jokes.

Most people will come into contact with an artificial intelligence chatbot at some point. Chatbots use machine learning to chat to humans and understand open-ended questions, in a process of continuous learning and improvement.

AI chatbots can identify the language, content and intention of a query and respond accordingly. They are most commonly used in customer services.

Artificial intelligence is a fantastic resource.

What are the four types of artificial intelligence?

Experts generally classify AI into four different types.

Reactive machines are task specific, with no memory. The most famous is Deep Blue, the IBM chess program that beat Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the 1990s. Deep Blue could identify the pieces on the board and make predictions, but its lack of memory meant it couldn’t act based on previous experience.

Limited memory AI systems use data collected in the recent past to make decisions in the present. Self-driving cars are one example. These cars use sensors to identify and interpret traffic signals, road gradients and the presence of pedestrians, and make immediate decisions as a result.

Theory of mind AI is a machine that can understand human emotion and predict how humans will behave. This kind of social intelligence is essential if AI machines are to become truly integrated members of human teams.

Self-aware AI refers to AI machines that have a sense of self, which means they are conscious and able to understand their own state. Most tech experts agree that self-aware AI does not currently exist.

How is AI software developed?

There is such a huge buzz around AI that companies are racing to develop products and services powered by the latest AI technology.

Companies interested in utilizing AI need developers who can access the specialized hardware and software needed to write and train machine-learning algorithms.

Some of the most popularly-used programming languages for this purpose today include Python, R and Java.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of AI?

Artificial intelligence is a fantastic resource. AI-powered machines can undertake data-heavy tasks in record time, and are highly effective at detail-oriented work. They deliver consistent results and, in certain roles, are more efficient than humans.

AI-powered virtual agents, such as an artificial intelligence chatbot, can also be available 24-7 and do not require the care and amenities than humans require, such as fair pay, safe and appropriate working hours and conditions, healthcare and pensions.

On the other hand, AI-powered machines require significant technical expertise to develop, test and maintain and there is a global shortage of tech workers who have the skills and ability to construct AI tools.
